| DON'T: Promote Sites on
PPC engines that have Pop-Up windows.
We were interested in
creating Pay-Per-Click ads to drive traffic to an affiliate
page. We created our list of keyword phrases (takes time). We
spent more time creating test ads that would rotate on the PPC
search engines. All was well for a couple of days. We made one
sale. Then the ads were pulled by the editorial staff of the PPC
company. We had spent time and MONEY in vain.
DON'T: Try to market
sites by using Craig's List.
I bought a $400 program that
supposedly allowed me to list ads on Craig's List across the
country, multiple times, ongoing, automatically. I was asked for
up-sells on a regular basis. The forums were no help. They do
not want to give away their secrets. Craig's List consistently
pulled my ads and my time and money was wasted, leaving me very frustrated.
DON'T: Leave your
hop-link or affiliate link exposed to public view.
Savvy Internet people will
substitute their own userID for yours and take away commissions
you would have received. Ignorance is costly. Our sales improved
tremendously after we discovered we needed to hide our affiliate
identity. But it took awhile before we discovered this secret,
costing us time and money.
We found the
Stealth Cloaker to be an excellent program to convert our
affiliate links to more "acceptable" reader links. It's easy and
very efffective!!
DON'T: Use free Internet
hosting.
Banner ads will be put on
free hosting sites that will mark you as an amateur. You will
have no control over the ads shown on your site. Get your own
domain name (www) through a reputable hosting company.
I highly
recommend SiteSell.com
- it is a full-bodied hosting company that
also incorporates step-by-step effective web design for the
novice. Follow their steps and they'll deliver a profitable web
business.
DON'T: Build your
keyword list from your website.
Choose your targeted
keywords first and then build your website content around them.
Wordtracker
is a subscription based site that actually reveals statistics on
keywords searched for on the Internet.
This is your base and should
be your starting point. Failure to do this will result in low
click-through rate and a lower quality score with Google and
Yahoo.
